MORE FANS WITH LAPTOPS

The Herald readers write

Rugby v football: the debate rumbles onJoe Shaw (Fans With Laptops, February 26) is a "wind up merchant" who should be ignored.

The real problem for rugby is a Scotland team in meltdown, which will leave Murrayfield, on match days, to the Range Rover brigade whose day out comprises a performance of the Mexican wave' and a champagne picnic in the car park.

David Andrew, Glasgow I take it Joe Shaw loves the fact football in Scotland is dominated by Rangers, Celtic and their foreign legions and thrills every year to the two-horse league race?

I refute the fact rugby is for the privileged. I went to a comprehensive school and was "privileged" to have been introduced to rugby at 15 by teachers who taught us out of normal hours. This was lost after the teachers strike, as was many a football practice.

Money is the answer to rugby's problem and is at the heart of Scottish football's. How many clubs in Scotland can compete on the same stage as Rangers and Celtic? No Joe, football is for the privileged foreign player at the Premier League level.

Dave King, Glasgow

So Scotland lost again at rugby "football"- a game so stupid that little contact is made between foot and "ball". Said "ball" is not even that given the dictionary defines a ball as being spherical.

To make matters worse, half the team run in one direction while throwing the "ball" in the opposite direction. The other half cuddle, bend over and stick their faces into the bottoms of those in front.

However rugby fans, do not dismay. As I have grown older I realise all sports are stupid, even my favourites of golf and cricket. This is surely as it should be as sport is meant to be fun. Money is in danger of destroying what should be recreational activities.
