Top Teams returning to the Greenyards for Melrose Sevens
Top southern hemisphere Clubs STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY from Cape Province in South Africa and PONSONBY from Auckland, New Zealand are set to return for the 115th playing of the World famous Melrose Sevens on 9th April 2005, where they will be joined by newcomers NEWCASTLE FALCONS from England’s Zurich Premiership.
STELLENBOSCH will be making a seventh appearance at the home of Rugby Sevens whilst PONSONBY turn out for their third, and who can forget the magnificent way both played in the nail-biting Final at the Greenyards in 2004 which STELLENBOSCH just held on to win by 36 points to 35.
NEWCASTLE FALCONS plan to field a top-quality development side in their first appearance at Melrose Sevens and are no strangers on the Borders Sevens circuit having played at Peebles and Selkirk.
THE SCOTTISH THISTLES, finalists in 2003 and semi-finalists last year will also return together with Scottish Clubs GALA, HAWICK, JEDFOREST, KELSO, LANGHOLM, PEEBLES, SELKIRK, BOROUGHMUIR (Winners in 2002), CURRIE, HERIOTS, WATSONIANS, ABERDEEN GRAMMAR SCHOOL F.P., AYR, BIGGAR, GLASGOW HAWKS and hosts MELROSE complete the 20 team draw.
Melrose’s Sevens Convener, George Bunyan, says he is delighted at the calibre of the sides his Committee has been able to attract to this year’s tournament. “With STELLENBOSCH determined to retain the Ladies Centenary Trophy and PONSONBY equally determined to go one better than last year, and any one of a dozen other sides capable of going all the way, I believe we can look forward to yet another outstanding afternoon of top quality Sevens rugby
