Tippett try tips tense battle in Ayr's favour
Ron Evans At Millbrae
Ayr 14
Glasgow Hawks 5
IN THE best conditions for months, Ayr secured their first double over Hawks.
It hardly looked likely in the first quarter as Hawks threatened to cut loose, with Rory Kerr and Max Evans prominent.
But it was Ayr that opened the scoring through Kenny Diffenthal's penalty.
It looked as though they could add to that with a Colin White break to the line. However, from the turnover, Hawks countered the length of the field for wing Marc Davids to go in after a sweeping move.
Hawks failed to take chances both with boot and ball in hand and paid the price in the second half when Ayr dominated. No8 Glen Tippett gave Ayr constant momentum and celebrated a fine performance with the game's only try.
Diffenthal potted a drop goal and nailed a penalty five minutes from time. "We are trying to change our style and I think today showed that," said Craig Redpath, the Ayr coach.
