Heriots’ Rugby
Matches between Hawks and Heriots are always great occasions and generally high scoring and entertaining. With the league positions settled there is nothing to play for other than bragging rights and a bit of fun. We welcome ‘the Nails’ to Anniesland today and hope for another good one.
Shame to see GHA being relegated but congratulations to West who will ensure that there are some intriguing derby matches again next season.
Future Events
Hawks have accepted an invitation to open the new club-house at Greenock Wanderers on Saturday 3rd May as the centre-piece of a festival of rugby over that weekend. By coincidence the invitation of Hawks could not be more appropriate as the founding clubs were all previously involved with Wanderers.
Wanderers played Kelvinside Academicals at the opening of Fort Matilda, High School FP at the opening of their last clubhouse and Glasgow Academicals at the opening of the extension to that clubhouse!
I expect that it will be a lively day. But for some hard-partying souls they will then have the trip to Caldy the next morning for the annual 7s in the Wirral.
Other 7s that Hawks will participate in include:
The jewel in the Scottish 7s crown - 12 April – Melrose;
26 April – Stirling; and at Cartha on 10th May – The Glasgow City 7s.
Ally Craig
The job as Hawks 2nd XV coach is probably one of the most difficult and frustrating at Anniesland. Team preparation always disrupted by injury to 1st & 2nd team players is just one of the problems. After 3 years in the hot-seat Ally Craig is stepping down from the position and we owe him an enormous vote of thanks for his contribution. Hopefully he will not disappear but will take on an alternative role within Hawks.
But his weekly hunt for an appropriate quote to begin his match report will be left behind. (This week’s was - Don’t die with the music in you” – Wayne Bennett, Brisbane Broncos coach!! Or I got the music in me – Kiki Dee)
He counts many of the players who have passed through Hawks as friends and is still in contact with a large number. Reminds me of why we are all involved – it’s supposed to be fun…. Isn’t it?
Dinner Dance
10th May – don’t forget to book. See Kenny Baillie or Gordon McCallum. Details on the website. And so is the info for the Hawks 100 club.
Speedy Recovery
Our Club Development manager, Grant Talbot though a bit of extra conditioning work and a run-out with the 2s last week would be a good idea. Unfortunately he fractured his leg after about 20 mins and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Especially as he is essential to the Hawks Summer Camp for all 8-16 year olds between 4th and 8th August. Info on the website.
