Scotland missed out on a place in the last eight of the Adelaide Sevens.
Scotland came from 17-0 down at half-time to beat the Cook Islands 22-17 thanks to a telling contribution by Jim Thompson in the second half as he scored one and set up another in a sublime climax.
Thompson and his team-mates, however, were undone by a strong Argentina side 19-17 in their next match.
Scotland then went down 38-10 to New Zealand in the final pool match. The Scots missed out on a quarter-final place on points differential.
With the Cook Islands pulling off a shock 40-21 win over Argentina they went through to face Samoa in the last eight.
Scotland will play Wales in the quarter-final of the Bowl.
New Zealand 7s 38, Scotland 7s 10
The Scotland 7s team suffered their second defeat of the first day of competition at the Adelaide Sevens today at the hands of New Zealand, the 2006/07 IRB Sevens World Series champions and current Series leaders.
New Zealand dashed to a 24-0 first half lead, but Scotland fought back after the break.
Mike Adamson and Chris Fusaro both crossed the whitewash but two late converted tries for New Zealand denied the Scots any kind of comeback.
That result means that Scotland will now face Wales in the Bowl competition tomorrow as the Scots lost out on a place in the Cup quarter-finals to the Cook Islands on point's difference.
After the game, Scotland 7s coach, Stephen Gemmell said: It was a good effort, but again we made too many individual mistakes.
"We didnt make some key one-on-one tackles, which you have to do against New Zealand. The challenge now is to regroup before we face Wales tomorrow and make a big step up from last weekend."
