Ladies Vets and Youth Draw for Melrose 125 Sevens
As part of the extended events programme of the 125th Anniversary Melrose Sevens, the draw for the Veterans, Ladies and Youth Tournaments took place on Friday evening. Mr and Mrs Harry Cummings of Electra-Com Electra-Com (sponsors of the veterans and ladies competitions) and Mr and Mrs John Crawford representing Crawfords Third Generation (sponsors of the youth tournament) were on hand to make the draw.
The ladies event includes guest teams from as far away as Loughborough while the Veterans tournament includes several sides from overseas and promises to be a colourful and exciting spectacle. The Youth Tournament includes teams from England, Ireland and Scotland.
An Edinburgh veterans team is expected to include former Melrose and Scotland player Rowan Shepherd, Scotland and Watsonian Scott Hastings and Dave McIvor of Scotland and Edinburgh Accies. Facing them will be the Cayman Islands from the Caribbean and Kansas City Wanderers from the US. Melrose are drawn in group B, with the tie of the group being when the home team play Roma which could prove to be yet another pulsating Scotland verses Italy clash!
Group C is the group of “death” although local favourites Border Reivers will be hoping to qualify against Palmer of the USA, a potentially strong Presidents team and Dundee Pigbarians. The final group includes one of the tournament favourites Ulster who are expected to include several of the squad who won the European Cup in the late 1990’s. This international group also includes English team Ledbury, Glasgow Hawks and The Hague from Holland.
The Veterans tournament is played over two days with the pool games taking place on Thursday 10th April. The following day will see the top eight teams play off for the Cup with the remainder taking part in the Bowl competition.
The Youth Under 16 Teams have been drawn from a wide geographical area within the British Isles, giving the youngsters the opportunity to forge lasting memories of the 125th Anniversary of Seven-a-side rugby in Melrose. Seeding has taken place to allow the youngsters the experience of playing against sides from the other home countries and also keep sides apart from the same area of Scotland.
Pool Group A sees Dungannon from Northern Ireland, Musselburgh, Dumfries and Hawick drawn together, while Strathendrick, Kirkcaldy, Selkirk and Barnhall (Dublin) make up Group B.
Group C comprises of Northern from Gateshead and Eton Manor from Kent, representing England, alongside Ayr from the west and a Merchiston Castle School from Edinburgh. In Group D, hosts Melrose are drawn against Scottish rivals Cartha Queens Park and Boroughmuir with Moseley from Birmingham providing the English opposition.
The Youth tournament is played to semi-final stageon Friday 11th April with a rare opportunity given to the finalists to play between the semi-final and final of the main sevens tournament on Saturday 12th April in front of what is expected to be a bumper crowd.
