Veteran show whets the appetite for main event
BUOYANT mood of celebration and rugby camaraderie has engulfed Melrose before the teams even set foot on the Greenyards turf for what is destined to be a memorable 125th celebration of the original sevens tournament.
The sight of Gavin and Scott Hastings locking horns with Craig Chalmers and Graham Shiel, and Doddie Weir 'sprinting' close to a full six yards to score a try in the Electra-Comm Melrose 125 Veterans Tournament, and a night with some of the greatest Scottish exponents of sevens in a tent opposite the Greenyards on Thursday whets the appetite.
The conclusion of the well-supported veterans tournament yesterday – Mark Blair's Ulster beat the Border Reivers in an entertaining final, while Glasgow Hawks of old edged their Ayr rivals in the bowl final – brought the atmosphere to a warm, bubbling intensity ahead of today's main event
