DONALD SLOAN


Donald Sloan who played alongsiside the likes of Angus Cameron GHSFP and Hamish Dawson Accies has died



Edinburgh Accies centre Donald Sloan, among a Scottish rugby elite who followed his father, Allen, into the national side, has died, aged 81.

Donald Sloan won seven caps between 1950 and 1953 highlighted by two tries in a Murrayfield victory over England and another when Scotland had one of their most memorable home victories over a Welsh side containing 11 British Lions. He also scored against Ireland in Edinburgh.

Altogether 16 father and sons have represented Scotland and the Sloans were the first from out of Edinburgh Accies.

Allen Sloan, a stand-off, won nine caps between 1914 and 1921.

In addition to representing Edinburgh Accies, Donald Sloan also played for London Scottish, of whom he captained in 1956, and was a Barbarian in 1949 and 1950.

As a sevens player he helped Accies won the prestigious Melrose tournament in 1949.

Donald Sloan is survived by wife Daphne as well as sons, Andrew, Kim and Richard.
