After an evenly contested 15 minutes Aberdeen opened the scoring with a converted try and followed up in 28 minutes with a penalty for 10-0. After a period of intense pressure, Craig Gossman dived over for a try, converted by Mike Dickson to bring the score back to 10-7. Just before half time, GHK made a mess of a 22 drop out then had the ensuing clearance kick charged down. The ball crossed the try line an lay there for what seemed like an eternity until an Aberdeen player decided to fall on it; a lot of good work undone and 17-7 down at half time.
Ten minutes into the second half the Aberdeen No7 was sent to the sin bin for persistantly killing the ball. GHK spent the rest of the game, bar one unfortunate incident, camped in the Aberdeen 22 but could not convert pressure into points and were punished on 65 minutes (the unfortunate incident) when the Aberdeen right winger collected a wayward kick, rounded the sole defender and scored in the corner, 22-7. On 78 minutes the Aberdeen loosehead was sin binned, again for killing the ball; one minute later GHK scored a converted try for 22-14. With the game almost over, the Aberdeen flanker repeated his ball killing exploits and returned to the sidelines but it was too late for GHK.
Clearly not the result we wanted but giving away soft scores at critical times and failing to score with the opposition on the back foot cost us dearly.
Lessons have been learned and we now look forward to next season's campaign ..............
