CHESHIRE begin their County Championship programme tomorrow when they meet Yorkshire at Macclesfield (3pm).

It will be a tough task for Cheshire against opponents who always to do well in the competition.

Cheshire county committee chairman Graeme Marrs said: “Obviously Yorkshire and Lancashire will take some beating but we are up for it this year and feel pretty confident.

“It is time we made another appearance in the final.”

Cheshire will be against Lancashire at New Brighton next Saturday and finish the group stages against Warwickshire at Coventry on May 17.

The winners of the group will meet the southern winners at Twickenham to decide the championship.

Jon Sewell from Birkenhead Park will again lead Cheshire.

Meanwhile, Caldy stage their annual sevens event on Sunday at Paton Field from 11.30am.

There will be five pools of four clubs with the successful ones going forward to the knockout stages for the Okell Shield and Craig Hodgkinson Bowl.

The line-up includes Glasgow Hawks, Wharfedale, Morley, Fylde, the Sale Development squad, the Mighty Minnows Guest Seven, the Hilbre Islanders comprising mostly Wirral players, and the Woodchurch Warriors made up mainly of New Brighton players.

Caldy will be in the contest and other local clubs involved include Waterloo, Chester, Birkenhead Park, Merseyside Police, Oldershaw and Wirral.

The Colts Tens event normally played on Saturday has been cancelled this year.

The Cheshire Vase and Plate finals will be played at Winnington Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Sandbach and Northwich clash in the Vase with Wallasey up against Crewe & Nantwich in the Plate.
