Good afternoon everyone,
I have had a considerable number of people asking me to add their name to the email listing to ensure that they receive my fortnightly dribble of Accies Rugby News. If you know of any other Accies supporters who would like to be added to the list please send me their email address.
This Saturday 27th September the 1stXV have a league game against Stewartry at New Anniesland at 3pm. Prior to kick off you can come to the Clubhouse for a soup and sandwich lunch and a refreshment. The bar will be open from 12-30pm. There is no necessity to pre book just turn up.
In three weeks time we have a vital match against Whitecraigs when there will be a proper lunch. Tables are now available 6,8 or 10. or if there is a smaller number in your party we will fit you in. The cost is £12 for Sponsor members and £15 for non sponsor (this includes gate fee of £3.00).
On the subject of Sponsor member I am delighted to report that we have raised nearly £3000 from this scheme and I thank all who have supported it.
We have a small number of the squad still to be allocated a sponsor. If you would like to participate it costs £100 for a player or less for a part sponsorship. We can get an additional 24% from the Revenue if you are a tax player.
Team news:
We had a good away win at Forrester last week and now lie in 4th place in the league. The sides in 2nd and 3rd place, Linlithgow and Hawick YM respectively, play each other on Saturday so a win will take us up to 3rd position.
Our new No. 6 Cruz has scored 7 tries from 4 games so far including all three on Saturday. He alone makes a visit to New Anniesland worthwhile as he is quite a player.
We are nearly back to full strength with Stewart Smith returning and Ross Kennedy back after a two year injury absence. Ryan Moseby our New Zealand centre suffered a cracked rib in the opening game and it will be another week before he is fully fit. By the time we have to play the leading clubs we should be injury free and a potent combination.
Please note that there are two attachments with this email. The first is an early programme for the match that you can print off and bring with you on Saturday.
The second is a fun competition. You can predict the outcome of the results of the games in the National League Division 2 for this Saturday. Print off as many copies as you like and bring them with you to the game on Saturday. The deadline for receiving them is 3pm on Saturday. The cost is £1 per entry and you can enter as often as you like. You can also enter on line by sending the completed entry back to me by email. payment can be made later or by cheque.
It's just a bit of fun and may make the Rugby section a few pounds. Good luck you might just be a winner.
Finally if you are a non playing member of the Glasgow academical Sports Club and wish a copy of the Hawks and accies fixture list let me know and I shall send you a card.
Best wishes
Alasdair Graham
Chairman's Welcome
On behalf of Glasgow Accies Rugby I welcome the President, Committee Members, Players and Coaching staff from Stewartry RFC to New Anniesland this afternoon. I hope that you have an enjoyable afternoon.
In the past few seasons we have had some highly competitive matches against Stewartry and few who saw the momentous Shield semi final in 2002 at Castle Douglas would ever forget it for its intensity and closing drama. Although losing it spurred Accies on to a Murrayfield final in the same competition two years later.
Last season the sides won their home games in two tight battles. Hopefully today we will witness a game of running rugby.
Last Saturday Accies traveled to Forrester and played well enough to win by 17-10. Forrester Park is never an easy place to win at the best of times due to its slope and underfoot conditions. The difference between the sides was the strength of Accies defence and the powerful running of Cruz who scored all three of Accies tries.
Captain
We regret to report that Jamie Doig has had to step down as Club captain due to a serious leg injury. He has sportingly handed over to Richard McKnight. We wish Jamie a speedy recovery and Richard all success for the rest of the season.
Accies Man of the Match Sponsor
We are pleased to announce that the man of the match sponsor for this season is
anCnoc. The recipient will be presented with a bottle of 12-year-old anCnoc Whisky after the match. We are most grateful to anCnoc for their generosity and ask you to support their product by purchasing it from the bar at a discounted price of £2.10 for a dram.
The second winner two weeks ago was Cruz Kawakameni for his try double against Hillfoots.
Arthur Watson
We regret to announce the death of Arthur two weeks ago today. He was a great all round sportsman in rugby, cricket, golf and tennis. In the late 60’s and 70’s he played regularly for Accies at full back. Our sympathy goes out to his wife Eleanor and his family
Match Ball
The ball for today’s match has been kindly sponsored by former full back and Club President Robin Hopkins. We are very grateful for his generosity.
We still have opportunities for members to sponsor the ball for future matches and to select the Accies man of the match. Ask Gordon Wilson or Alasdair Graham for details
Whitecraigs
The local derby against Southsiders, Whitecraigs, is due to be played at New Anniesland on Saturday 18th October. We are anticipating a large visiting support on the day.
A pre match lunch will be available and I ask you to consider making up a table of 6,8 or 10. Individuals will also be welcome. Please contact Alasdair Graham for details.
