With the arrival at Old Anniesland of prop Nick Cox from English National 1 Club Coventry an old link is renewed
Glasgow H.S.F.P. had a long relationship with the Midland club playing them on a regular basis, often as part of Easter Tours
Nick 23 started his career at Kenilworth then the Bath Rugby Academy before playing with Gloucester and Coventry where one of his team mates was Mike Umaga who played with GHK in the early 1990s.
Nick who has played for England Under 18s,19s and 21s is coming to Glasgow to study and will be helping with rugby coaching at Glasgow Academy
The Ed asked former Glasgow H.S.F.P Captain Bill Dunlop for his memories of Coventry
“ As you can see from the attached press cuttings we didn’t win many games against them. I think I can remember one. They were, in the 60’s and 70’s a major force in English rugby and fielded several caps. You will see in the 1963 report that they played TEN reserves as the regulars were on international duty. Among them are names like Peter Jackson, Phil Judd, Hugh Godwin, George Cole, Ricky Melville, John Barton, Billy Gittings, John Owen, Mike Mclean, Mike Broderick most if not all of whom were caps. The one most likely to be known by the present players is David Duckham. He ran riot against us in one game when he was about 18. In the dressing room our full back, the late and sorely missed Dougie Forbes, was taken to task by someone who said, “ For Pete’s sake (or something like it) Forbes, that wee boy scored four tries. You never tackled him once.” Defiant as always, Dougie replied, “Well, he never tackled me either.” I’m not sure if the fixture was due to the fact that the GHSP captain of the late 50’s, RD (Dick) Andrews, moved to Coventry and, I think, became the captain there. We always had a great reception. The other Easter w/e fixtures over the years were Northampton, Bedford and Sale
