GHK MATCH REPORT

GHK 50 Uddingston 5

GHK vs Uddingston 29/11/08 Old Anniesland - League

It was an extremely cold afternoon at OA and we were on the big pitch again.
Given our respective positions in the league GHK should have been away at the races from the off. However, Uddingston clearly had not read the script and after a pretty scrappy 10 minutes or so they took the lead with an unconverted try. Time for some serious head scratching from the touchline!
Davy Whyte began the fightback with a good break but it all got a bit frantic and came to nothing. Some semblance of order was restored when Andy White and his dad Davy combined nicely to give the ball to Rory Love. After a determined and speedy outside run, Rory opened our account and it was now 5 – 5.
This seemed to spark off a rethink on our part and a good break and pass from Disco put our favourite Australian, Sean McCaffrey, over in the corner. Obviously Robbie’s huge expenditure on a new kicking tee was worthwhile as he slotted the conversion. 12 – 5 and the presidential gaggle – though still frozen – was feeling a bit cheerier.
We should have put the game and bonus point to bed much quicker but some pretty careless handling kept Uddingston in the hunt.
As if reading my mind – OK I was hollering a bit – the backs kept it simple and shipped the ball out and a mazy run from Andy Fleming brought the 3rd try duly converted by the special orange tee. 19 – 5.
Shortly after the restart, some quick thinking from Pete Broadbent and a hand over to Sean followed by a great forward drive got us over the line for the 4th try and bonus point secured – general sigh of relief from the bufties. Robbie converted again and we were well clear at 26 – 5 half time.

Second half continued the good moves and a lovely quick break from Mike Aird brought another try and another conversion – money well spent AJ! 33 – 5.
Hugh Parker had been all over the place all day, as well as winning good line out ball, and a good break from him let Andy Whyte release Gun – replacement for crocked Josh Mihil – and a good inside break got him over the line for a deserved try. 38 – 5.
Not to be outdone, young Well’ard got in on the act with a determined charge and was rewarded with a try converted by Robbie 45 – 5.
By now the old geezers on the touch line were chittering somewhat but the boys kept up the pressure and this plus the lure of several foaming ales( not to mention Fiona’s pies) kept our spirits up.
A line out well into the Uddingston 22 allowed us to put on real pressure and after a scramble near the line Darcy went over to cap a very strong performance by him. No conversion this time so the full time score 50 – 5.
As good a result as this was we are going to need to be a bit smarter next week against Cumbernauld.
