This Saturday (January 24), Glasgow Hawks (“the Club”) will launch a mini rugby section at the Donald Dewar Sports Centre in Drumchapel. The introduction of Hawks Minis based in Drumchapel is part of the Club’s commitment to developing rugby in the wider, North Glasgow community.
Since August 2007, Glasgow Hawks Club Development Manager, Grant Talbot, has been working closely with the 31 cluster schools in the North Glasgow and the result of his hard work is the demand for a mini rugby section for boys and girls between P3 and P7.
In partnership with the Glasgow City Council Active Schools sports co-ordinator, Grant Talbot has delivered, or is in the middle of delivering, a six-week block of rugby to boys and girls from Camstradden Primary, Drummore School, Langfaulds Primary, Stonedyke Primary, St Brendan’s Primary, St Clare’s Primary and St Ninian’s Primary. The vast majority of players participating in the new Hawks Minis come from these seven schools. It is anticipated that between 20 and 30 boys and girls will attend on Saturday with the objective to grow this number every week.
Hawks Minis will run from 10:00 – 11:00 AM each Saturday morning at the Donald Dewar Sports Centre in Drumchapel, where we have access to the Astroturf pitch with the possibility of a grass area also being available for use. The Club is sincerely grateful to Culture and Sport Glasgow who have helped secure the facilities as well as cover the costs for the first eight weeks.
Glasgow Hawks is indebted to Bank of Ireland and our partner schools, The High School of Glasgow, The Glasgow Academy and Kelvinside Academy, for their continued support of our community development programmes.
Finally, to mark the launch of Hawks Minis, we are delighted that Scotland International and former Hawks centre three-quarter, Andrew Henderson, and Scotland 7s Internationalist and current Hawks player, Michael Adamson, will be helping out on Saturday morning.
If any boys and girls are interested in joining Hawks Minis, please contact Glasgow Hawks Club Development Manager, Grant Talbot, at [email protected] or on 07825 181 041.
NOTE FROM ED
Although Donald Dewar was not a great exponent of rugby, he was not a bad distance runner. Your correspondent recalls competing against him in the Glasgow Academy Cross Country Championships which, at that time, were held from the former Glasgow University playing fields at Garscadden which later became the political heartland of Scotland's first First Minister.
