MELROSE 22 HAWKS18

SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY REPORTS

A LAST-GASP try by substitute Ally Maxwell enabled Glasgow Hawks to snatch a consolation bonus point lifeline in their struggle to sidestep the dreaded top-flight trapdoor.
The Borders side Melrose had been on course to deny them any reward when Scott Wight landed the last of his penalty sequence.

But with just second left at the Greenyards, flanker Maxwell – who had come off the bench in the early stages of this pivotal match for the visitors – clawed back some much-needed pride.

The other Hawks try came in the second half from hooker Gavin Mories just as the Borderers had threatened to run away with it.

Melrose's scores were bagged by James Lew, who was by far and away the top man on display, and prop Stan Williams.

However, Wight's penalty volley proved to be decisive when it really mattered the most.
