The match was preceded by a University Barbarians which included Ally Maclay versus Sanyo match, which the visiting Japanese tourists won 57-31.

Wallabies Richard Harry and John Langford played for the Barbarians team made up from Colts, grade and former greats.

Sanyo, on a short tour of Australia before the start of the Japanese competition, featured former All Black five-eighth Tony Brown, who has lost none of his goal-kicking prowess.
