Championship Convener responds in the Herald

Arrogance charge well wide of mark
If Gordon McCready (Fans with Laptops, February 24) relies upon your newspaper to be informed about the recent difficulties in club rugby scheduling, he will not know that in response to the notice to clubs on February 11 on the likelihood of having to decide fixtures by alternative means, six clubs agreed outcomes.

That represents three other matches the Championship Committee would have had to decide in the same way as those involving Cumbernauld and St Boswells. He will not know that league fixtures are already being rescheduled to May 9, the season ends on May 10, and this is still February. He might be under the impression that the two clubs concerned were eliminated from the competition. They were not; they were put forward to the bowl competition, with the prospect of additional fixtures and, if successful, a day at Murrayfield.

It took considerable courage to make the decision, not least because vilification by the media and others within Scottish rugby could be anticipated. Unfortunately, in all of that vilification, there is yet to be advanced a constructive alternative solution.

I am available to discuss this issue, but please do not make charges of cowardice or arrogance for they are well wide of the mark.

David N Mackie, Convener, Championship Committee, Murrayfield
