First half:
Waikato had several good chances to score throughout the first half. Taranaki took momentum away from Waikato`s positive play turning defensive moments into positive scoring attacks. While Waikato had Mark Morunga in the sin bin Taranaki took advantage and scored late in the half leading at the break 7 nil. Waikato had two missed penalty opportunities during the first half.

Second half:
Waikato started the second half getting the ball wide and setting targets that stretched the Taranaki defence, however Taranaki bullied Waikato at the collision area and launched blindside attacks effectively. Taranaki took the game 17 – 0 to win the opening encounter of the NPC Development Teams division.
