Melrose update Hawks go out in semi finals

Austrialian Sevens player Jordan Macey continued his record of a try in each round when he ran in Melrose’s first score. Scott Wight converted.

The hosts were almost in a second time when Graeme Dodds played in Scott McCormick, but he was well held short of the posts. Melrose built on that play though when John Dalziel collected a long pass and James Lew, the second Australian Sevens player in the Melrose side, dummied and stepped past the Hawks defence for a second Melrose score.

Moments later Lew doubled his tally for the tie with Wight adding both conversions.

The home team closed out the first half when Wight collected another long pass and used his strength to break past a tiring Hawks defence. Melrose led 26-0.

Melrose came close to extending their lead in the second half, but Dodds’ pass was adjudged to have gone forward. The hosts made no mistake moments later, however, when Lew crossed for his hat-trick and then David Whiteford also scored with Wight adding both conversions.

Rob Hair grabbed a late consolation for Hawks, but they were well beaten by a Melrose side who had played one less round at this stage of the competition.
