GLASGOW HEADS FOR HISTORIC VENUE

So at last Glasgow head back to Scotstoun one of the city's most historic sports venues with a history stretching back over a century when it was known as Scotstoun Showgrounds
This great old ground currently undergoing a massive upgrade has been the home to many famous Scottish clubs like Victoria Park A.A.C,and even at times Glasgow H.S.F.P
In 1907 the World Cross Country Championships were held there with the runners taking in the then surrounding countyside even traversing the Anniesland playing fields on their way to the course turn at a small cross roads known as Anniesland Cross

THE SCOTSMAN REVEALS

Glasgow put down roots at new Scotstoun training HQ

GLASGOW'S efforts to put down roots in the city have finally uncovered significant success with the new Scotstoun Stadium to become the club's new state-of-the-art training complex next year.
The Warriors will not play at the redeveloped west end stadium – they have just confirmed a five-year deal to remain at Firhill – but having spent most weeks this season flitting between five different training venues the team will for the first time have all of its training requirements met at Scotstoun as from June 2010.

The £17.6million redevelopment of Scotstoun Stadium is due to be completed in the autumn, and a £1.3million extension of the adjoining leisure centre will be completed at the end of the year. The new facilities will include new grandstands, indoor athletics training facilities, refurbishment of the outdoor 400-metre athletics track and new fitness suite facilities.

There were hopes at one stage that Scotstoun might become Glasgow rugby's new home with a new state-of-the-art playing venue, but Glasgow City Council was keen to develop a ground with a wider remit, including a good athletics facility, as part of its commitment to sport in the build-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the 4,500 capacity Glasgow chiefs hope would be too small for the size of crowds they would like to have cultivated by 2010.

The council and 'Culture and Sport Glasgow' has continued to work closely with the SRU, however, to create what they term a rugby centre of excellence not dissimilar to Rangers' Murray Park and Celtic's Lennoxtown training complexes. Similarly, it will be available for reserve fixtures and Scotland age-grade matches.

Sean Lineen, the Glasgow coach, visited the stadium yesterday and admitted that it would make a significant difference to the current squad and help in his bid to attract top-quality players to Glasgow in the future. He said: "The plans for Scotstoun look fantastic. It's a world-class facility and I'm delighted it will be the new training base of Glasgow Warriors. Scotstoun will provide the club with a home for its players, coaches and staff in a location where they have all the facilities they require.

"We are a club on the up and to have direct access to both grass pitches and an all-weather surface here in addition to all strength, conditioning and medical facilities is a major boost to our future ambitions. We have world-class players here and we will soon have the facilities to match."
