Rob Moffat has been chosen to succeed Andy Robinson as Edinburgh coach, having previously been assistant to the new Scotland boss.
The 52-year-old has just returned from Japan, where he managed Scotland's Under-20 side at the IRB Toshiba Junior World Cup, finishing ninth.
He led Scotland A to the Churchill Cup final in Canada last year.
Moffat had a one-year spell as Borders coach 12 years ago - the first season of professional rugby in Scotland.
Edinburgh finished second in the Magners League last season - their highest-ever finish - and a delighted Moffat was hoping to build on that advance.
"The squad has made a lot of progress over the past two seasons with back-to-back record finishes in the Magners League," he said.
"But the main aim for next season will be to improve upon those achievements and take the development on to the next level.

A winger in his playing days, Moffat played 256 times for Melrose, but the closest he came to a Scotland cap was when he was part of the squad that toured the Far East in 1977.
On turning to coaching, he has earned a reputation for developing young talent and future Scotland internationals Gregor Townsend and Chris Paterson emerged from Gala's academy during Moffat's time at the Borders club.
He assisted Jim Telfer at Melrose and, after his short spell as Borders head coach, was assistant at the pro team for two years and then Glasgow Warriors for a similar time.
Moffat, who has also coached Scotland's Sevens squad, has spent three seasons as assistant and backs coach at Edinburgh.
Glasgow Hawks director of rugby Peter Wright and Melrose coach Craig Chalmers, also both former Scotland internationals, had also applied to succeed the new national boss.
In addition, former Scotland forwards coach George Graham was linked with the job after leaving Italian club Petrarca for family reasons.
Edinburgh chief executive Nic Cartwright said: "We were very impressed with the overall calibre of applicants for the head coach role and Rob was the strongest candidate and our number one choice.
"His knowledge, experience and enthusiasm will prove to be a major asset as part of a new-look coaching set-up.
"Continuity is an important factor behind the growth of any team and Rob's appointment will undoubtedly prove to be a seamless transition.
"Rob's role in the success story at Edinburgh so far cannot be underestimated and our back division has become a potent force."
Moffat, whose side will begin the season a friendly against Harlequins at Myreside on Saturday 22 August, will appoint a backroom team.
"His vision of Edinburgh's future is definitely one that will put a smile on the faces of our supporters," added Cartwright.
"Rob will be supported by two coaches, which underlines our ambition to become a leading European team and we believe the new structure will be a success."
