Scotland’s top talent aged between 14 and 17 are striding towards age-grade selection at the Struan performance rugby camp this week.
The players arrived on Saturday and today (their last day at camp) they will play in a list of trial matches in a last bid to promote themselves in front of their respective Scotland selectors.
The intense performance camp – which last season celebrated its 30th anniversary – puts the young players through a gruelling week-long schedule starting with a wake-up call and morning run at 8am before breakfast, rugby coaching, aquatic recuperation and team building before lunch, specialist coaching clinics up until their evening meal, and expansive rugby games until 9pm.

Senior performance development manager and former Scotland internationalist, Grant McKelvey, is in charge of the rugby side of the camp and, alongside Scottish Rugby’s performance development team, will deliver the program of rugby to the four age groups.
McKelvey said: “The dynamic of the camp has been excellent, the staff have been great and the SSC staff have done an excellent job of managing the camp itself.
“There’s a good, hard work ethic here and that’s been coming through in all the groups. A lot of the boys are improving through their efforts but there’s a good sense of fun too. We’ve got young fellows who are growing in confidence, are improving their skills, meeting new people and making new friends”

“We set our aims and objectives and made them very clear right from the start. For the older age groups the aim and objective was to start the selection process for the national under-17 squad while for the under-15 and 16s it’s their first real introduction to a performance programme.
“The sessions have all been coordinated by myself so they all have the same themes, the same ethos and the same messages that are delivered across all the age-groups.

The Struan camp has catered for a host of Scotland internationalists in their formative years including Mike Blair, John Barclay, Ben Cairns and Nick de Luca.
