Over recent seasons West have been fortunate to have had the services of John Beattie a Glasgow Accie and a "superstar" who was largely responsible for bringing them from Premier 3 back to the top table

Whilst engaged in some modest research for John Beattie this writer uncovered some research on John Beattie. He was once designated a "superstar" ---some of you may think this a flight of fancy but not so this column deals in fact not fiction this status being recently reinforced by his participation in the Great Scottish Run

In 1986 in support of Sport Aid John took part in a Superstars Contest at Bishopbriggs Sports Centre--Sport Aid being a followup to Bob Geldof's Live Aid/BandAid events

John competed in a range of disciplines along with top performers from several sports
The events included an obstacle race,cycle race,archery,gym test,football skills,basketball skills and sprint shuttles
The participants came from various sports-
Bryan Banks Scottish international Volleyball player
Graeme English Scottish and British international wrestler and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist
Mel Fowler Scottish long jump champion
Alan McInally of Celtic
Alan McMillan Scottish international Badminton player
Brian Whittaker of Hearts
Angus McPherson of Rangers

Despite extensive research through the back copies of that well known west of Scotland journal the Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs Herald your correspondent could not uncover the final points position
