GHK 13 Helensburgh 8

Eager with anticipation the crowd gathered for what was expected to be a tough game against the team one place above us in the league.

GHK started well scoring a converted try in the first few minutes following confusion in the Helensburgh ranks, perhaps all the good things Charlie drilled into the boys at training through the week would stick.

In an afternoon of missed opportunities, some poor tackling and wrong options being taken it was disappointing that at half time the score was only 7 – 3 to GHK.

The second half started well with a penalty kicked to jettison us to a 10 - 3 lead. Surely the home side could then take advantage of Helensburgh being reduced to 14 men for the entire second half........

Sadly not, although there were some good opportunities to use overlaps and take points when 2 penalties were gifted by Helensburgh mid way through the second half. We opted to run them both (a penalty try being a real possibility) but failed to take advantage and Helensburgh eventually cleared their lines. Helensburgh fought their way back into the game with a well earned try. The crowd groaned and moved further onto the playing surface...not a good idea with the threat of points being deducted – apparently the pitch should be fenced off? Disco gave us all a row, goodness knows what pearls of wisdom were passed on to the team in the dressing room. Don’t mess with a man who wears a sleeveless cardigan after the game!

Remainder of the half fairly scrappy, thankfully we kicked a penalty with 10 minutes to go and fought on to hold the 13 - 8 lead.

Not all bad it still is chalked up a victory to take us to third in the league but one the team won't wish to dwell on.
