Premier league roundup

The final fixture of the month beckons for clubs across Scotland as points become increasingly precious to mounting a serious title challenge or to stake a claim for survival.
Check back for updates and rescheduled fixtures…

Ayr v Glasgow Hawks
League champions Ayr host a Glasgow Hawks side this weekend who, despite having the best goal difference in the league, have only two wins from two, while the Millbrae machine is undefeated in four games.
Still smarting from last weekend’s narrow home defeat against Glasgow rivals West of Scotland, Hawks coach, Peter Wright, said: “Our performance against West for 40 minutes was totally unacceptable and not what we expect from players of the quality we have at Hawks.
“We have worked hard all week on the things that went wrong and what better place to try and bounce back than at the home ground of the champions.”
Despite their flawless record, Ayr head coach, Kenny Murray, is keen to ensure his side don’t let up: “The players were extremely disappointed following our performance against Edinburgh Accies last week [they won 28-18 away from home] which was well below our usual standard. All credit to Accies who controlled most of the game," said Murray.
“Although it’s comforting that we can win games when playing badly, we will need to improve in all aspects of our game if we are to have any chance of winning this Saturday.”
The hosts have made three changes to the pack for the macch with Steven Adair and Glen Tippett returning to the front-row and number 8 berths respectively while associated Glasgow Warriors prop Ed Kalman has been released to play and starts at tight-head.
Watsonians v Boroughmuir
Watsonians and Boroughmuir go head to head at Meggetland on Saturday following home defeats to Edinburgh opposition last weekend.
Despite sitting in seventh and eighth-place, both sides will be aware that a bonus point win at this stage of the season could see them jump to the upper echelons of the division.
Heriot's v Edinburgh Accies
Heriot’s entertain a high-flying Edinburgh Accies at Goldenacre this weekend.
Despite being last year’s runners-up, it took Heriot’s four games to get their league campaign going with a 26-10 away win over Boroughmuir last weekend.
Heriot’s head coach, Bob McKillop, said: “Last week’s performance was much improved and we managed to sustain a good start for the duration of the game. However, Accies are definitely one of the form teams this season and will provide a massive challenge for us.”
Accies coach, Ian Barnes, added: "We are well aware of the strength in depth Heriot's have as a club and how often in the past we have gone to Goldenacre thinking that we had a real chance – only to come away with our tails between our legs."
West of Scotland v Dundee High Rugby
Dundee High travel to Burnbrae with justifiable confidence this weekend having won their last two games on the road.
Dundee coach, Ian Rankin, said: "Having come out of last week’s game with a full five points for the second week running, we’ve had the depth of our squad well and truly tested.
“With a number of Dundee players available after missing last week’s game - and the memory of West beating us in the Cup still fresh in the mind - I anticipate a real edge in our preparation this week.”
Despite their form, Dundee face a stern test against a West of Scotland side keen to keep the momentum earned from their first scalp away from home against city rivals Hawks last weekend in front of a 1500 crowd.
Selkirk v Melrose
Selkirk welcome Melrose to Philiphaugh this weekend aiming to get their first win of the season.
A a single bonus point is all that keeps Selkirk off the foot of the table and a win over their Border rivals would be all the sweeter if it means they are no longer in the relegation zone.
Selkirk coach, Kevin Barrie, said: “It was a much improved performance from us last week up at Dundee where we were competitive for the first 35-40 minutes but suffered a dip in the middle of the game, conceding two soft scores.
“There is always a bit of spice in a Border derby. Melrose have started their Scottish Hydro Premier 1 campaign well but hopefully a continued improvement in our performance can get us closer to our first victory of the season.”
Currie v Stewart’s-Melville FP
Bottom placed Stewart’s-Melville face a tough trip to Malleny Park to take on a Currie side yet to taste defeat this season.
Full-back Johnny Smith returns after missing last week while the club are prepared to wait on the results of tonight’s (Thursday) training session before making a call on the formidable Ross Weston.
Currie head coach, Ally Donaldson, said: “Stewart's-Melville have a more solid look to their team with several experienced players returning in last few weeks. By all accounts they gave a much improved performance against Melrose and will be looking to improve again this week.”
Despite a sticky start to their Premier One campaign, Stewart’s-Melville travel with a more settled side and have made only one change behind the scrum – Michael Donaghan makes his first start on the wing after impressing from the bench in recent weeks.
Up front, Scott Brewster is available again after suspension and slots back into the boiler house, with Paul Voy switching to the back-row to replace the injured Stuart Clark. Blair Tweedie starts at number 8.
Stewart’s-Melville Head coach, Graeme Moffat, said: “Currie are going well and trips to Malleny Park are always tough but, after an improved performance last week, the squad are confident of giving a good account of themselves.”
