GHK 34 Hawick Linden 7
This was an excellent victory in very difficult conditions - wind howling across and down the pitch.
The assembled bufties - a goodly number I might add - were treated to some excellent rugby and 6 very good tries from GHK and 1 from Linden.
John Shannon at stand off had a very good game keeping Linden down in their own 22 and using the pacey backs whenever opportunities arose - well done Gun.
Andy Shedden got the first of his 2 tries after a good handling move down the left. Forwards and backs combined and Linden had no answer to our pace and power.
The forwards soon established complete control and dominated a big and street wise Linden eight - welcome back skipper. A big welcome back too for Andy McT after his unnecesarily prolonged dose of purdah – thanks to the SRU for saving a few bob on postage! Pete Broadbent and Andy Drummond were charging about like men possessed but the pick of the forwards for me was the debutant no 6 – Andy Cumming. His tackle count and ball winning on the ground were outstanding. Gun kept the ball down in the Linden half and more excellent handling from forwards and backs brought two more tries in the left corner for Hugh Parker and Andy Shedden. At this point I must say well done to Danny Hoffman, although not on the score sheet, his distribution was a big part of all 6 tries.
Half time GHK 17 Hawick Linden 0.
We started the second half quietly optimistic of victory but we have no bonus points at all this season so there was much relief when Pete Broadbent ended one of his lung bursting runs with the fourth try.
Chris – what kind of Accie am I? – Breckenridge, replaced the impressive Gun and promptly stamped his mark on the game with a raking touchfinder right down to the Linden line. He continued from where Gun had left off and controlled the game very well.
It was pretty much one-way-traffic by now but we did butcher some glorious try scoring opportunities before Rory nipped past his man a couple of times to touch down. We can blame the treacherous wind to some extent but we really need to put more of these opportunities away.
It was a most trying day for goal kicking and so well done to Davy Whyte for the 2 conversions – your own very high standards make this look a poor tally but the wind was very difficult.
Final score GHK 34 Hawick Linden 7 – a very good all round performance but sadly marred by a bad injury to the mercurial Mike Aird who broke his ankle – out for 3 or 4 months probably. Nae luck wee man you’ll be missed.
If we can keep up this kind of performance we can expect a most enjoyable season. Well done to all.
