John Barclay wants to put one over on Biarritz
Glasgow Warriors today named a 26-man squad for Saturday’s Heineken Cup opener against Biarritz at Firhill (ko 3.45pm).
The Warriors enter the first game of their 2009/10 European campaign having rediscovered the winning touch last weekend with a well-earned victory against Cardiff Blues – their first win in the Welsh capital since 2002.
The last time the Warriors faced Biarritz at Firhill was in December 2007 when three Dan Parks penalties were enough to seal a memorable win.
John Barclay crossed the whitewash a week later in the away clash. His try in the 23rd minute helped the Warriors to an 11-3 half-time lead, but the home side came back in the second period with two penalties from Damien Traille followed by a try double from Tongan back-rower Samiu Vahafolau.
“We knew that we weren’t going to score many tries away to Biarritz so I knew how important it was to score early,” said the 23-year-old Scotland cap.
“We went onto concede two soft tries in the second half so it was probably the most depressing changing room I’d been in up to that point. I don’t want to experience that again.
“Although they meant so much at the time, I feel that the wins at home to Biarritz and away to Toulouse are ancient history now. People know we have the ability to beat these teams, but we can’t just be a ‘one big game’ team. We want to beat these sides on a regular basis, and win every game in our pool, and that begins on Saturday.”
