Match report from Aberdeen
Once Esso recovered from a long lie, the Aberdeen touring party set off up the Road for a tough contest at Gordonians splendid facilities at the School ground. On a calm sunny day there was a significant air of anticipation.
Sadly, after a good start there were too many unforced errors, poor kicking and missed tackles (sound familiar!).The first of these led to a well taken try by the home side's centres due to poor midfield defence. 7 - 0 to Gordonians. A good run into enemy territory by Davy Whyte after 20 minutes followed by poor ball retention allowed Gordonians to pounce quickly again after a run and chase episode up the stand touchline 12 - 0. A penalty following a sin bin incident brought us back to 12 - 3 and then another penalty followed a typical Disco breenge to make it 12 - 6 at half time. Lesson from the half - we must take advantage of the opposition when they are a man down.
More of the poor defence and unforced errors in the second half allowed the home side to score twice. However, a penalty kick from Davy and a try by our man of the match Pete Broadbent at least brought something to shout about for the travelling support. Final score a disappointing 29 - 14.
A frustrating afternoon for the travelling hordes and doubtless flailing of cutlasses in the dressing room after what should have been a better display. Less panic at crucial times and better clearance of our lines will dramatically help in future weeks.
Blackbeard may have had 14 wives but our fearless Captain Disco will be hoping to have the same number of able bodied souls making the correct decisions in our next game against the early pacesetters Aberdeenshire!
