INTERNATIONAL OLDIES PLAY MAYFIELD CURTAIN-RAISER
Wednesday, 28 October 2009
Dundee High welcomed former Scotland and club captain, Jon Petrie back to Mayfield last night (Tuesday 27 October) ahead of Saturday’s feast of rugby at the ground this Saturday.

A star-studded golden oldies match between Edinburgh Accies and the Dundee High Occasionals, featuring a host of former internationalists will act as a curtain raiser for the Scottish Hydro Premier One clash between Dundee High and Accies, and as a fund raiser for rugby charity Hearts and Balls.

Former Scotland captain, Jon Petrie, celebrates Scotland's 2006 6 Nations triumph over France
Petrie retired from a career which culminated in his captaining Scotland under Frank Hadden in 2005 while Frank, who himself played and coached at Dundee High, will join Jon as the Occasionals’ coach in a game which will feature former Scotland stars Stewart Campbell, Rowen Shepherd, Dave McIvor and Graham Shiel.
Speaking at Tuesday evening’s photo-shoot, Jon explained his delight at being asked to take part.
He said: “I really didn’t need to be persuaded to play. It’s been two years since I put a pair of rugby boots on and although I keep relatively fit I’m a couple of stones lighter. It’ll be interesting to see how the body reacts to a re-introduction to contact.
“It’s also a great opportunity to play alongside my brother Simon – something we haven’t done since our days here at Dundee High – and of course to support a very important charity.”

Jon was joined by Sandy Hutchison, one of his former coaches at Dundee High plus current head coach Ian Rankin and current Dundee captain Richie Hawkins, who, like all players, appreciates the worth of the fund-raising aspect to the game.
“Hearts and Balls is dedicated to helping out individuals who have been unfortunate to suffer injury while playing the game they love,” said Hawkins.
“It’s great to see the Occasionals and Edinburgh Accies choosing to support this fantastic cause and I’m sure that they will put on a good performance for all while hopefully having fun and raising funds at the same time.

“It will be awesome to see a good crowd turn out to watch our old boys in action and, all being well, stay on to see the 1st and 2nd XV who both having crucial games afterwards.”

Attracting former Dundee players from the length and breadth of the country, one rugby family in particular epitomise the enthusiasm for Saturday’s exhibition.
Peter, Andrew and Michael Clark, who all played for Dundee High at Mayfield over the years but never in the same team, will make the trip from London to create a long overdue piece of family history.
The game was the brain child of former Dundee High player, now a member of Accies, Alastair Lindsay and, along with former Dundee High captain and coach Sandy Hutchison, they have gathered two useful looking squads.
Dundee’s squad includes the evergreen pair of Dougie Gray and Dave Mason, who will feature in the Dundee High 2nd XV game against their Accies counterparts later in the afternoon.

Besides several fund-raising schemes among the players themselves, Hearts and Balls have provided branded collection buckets which will be organised by Dundee Eagles SVQ Craig Shearer and his development team who also plan to run a raffle.
