PREVIEW: Bone Steelers set to return to Dubai Sevens stage

27th Nov 2009

The Bone Steelers squad packed full of Scottish talent cannot wait to compete in the Dubai Sevens Veterans Tens Tournament next week, which marks the 40th anniversary of the Dubai Rugby Sevens.

The majority of the party head out of Glasgow on Tuesday buoyed by the fact that four members of the Scotland coaching staff - Gregor Townsend, Graham Steadman, Duncan Hodge and Stevie Scott - are involved.

Indeed, the squad boasts well over 200 full Scotland caps between them as well as league winning captains and a Great Britain rugby league international.

As well as Townsend, Hodge and Scott the other full Scotland caps involved are Glenn Metcalfe, James McLaren, Derrick Lee, Stuart Reid, Rowen Shepherd, David McIvor and Graham Shiel. Scotland A caps Gareth Flockhart, Fergus Wallace, David Boswell, Fergus Henderson, Ross McNulty and rugby league specialist Steadman make up the touring party.

The team, sponsored by OKI Printing Solutions, Eden Park, Hogmaneigh.com, Bone Steel and Henderson International will train next Wednesday morning at ‘The Sevens’ stadium, as they acclimatise to the conditions before taking on two group matches the following day. They will then compete on the Friday and, if they make it to the last four, will also play on the Saturday.

With the veterans event coinciding with he IRB event on the Friday and Saturday it promises to be a superb weekend with the Bone Steelers fully involved.

Townsend has previously played for the Bone Steelers back in 2005 and although it is important how the players do on the pitch next week the fund-raising they do off it will be just as important.

The Bone Steelers Foundation is committed to helping raise money for various charities through rugby related initiatives and was established in 2005 to help the Jonny Mitchell Appeal.

This year’s chosen charity is Livestrong and various events including an auction will be held during the week to raise money for The Lance Armstrong Foundation, which was created by the American cyclist after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and now unites, inspires and empowers people affected by the disease.
