FORMER Scotland full-back Glenn Metcalfe believes the current crop of young international players have a great opportunity to be around the squad for a number of years and really kick on under Andy Robinson's tutelage.
The 39-year-old may have been back in his native New Zealand for four years, but a more passionate Scot you will struggle to find.
Metcalfe has been in Dubai this week playing for the Scottish-based Bone Steelers in the International Invitational
Vets event.
In an exclusive interview with The Scotsman he said: "The guys who we have in the Scotland squad at the moment I have heard are very professional, they train hard, listen well and importantly respect the management.
"They are young guys who are probably going to be around the scene for a long while and that is a good sign. Hopefully Scotland under Robinson can find the consistency that is needed at the top level and really kick on."
Metcalfe became something of a cult hero during his time in Scotland.
He is best remembered for being part of the national side that won the 1999 Five Nations and he looks back on his time with Hawks and Glasgow with great affection.
"When I joined Glasgow Hawks back in 1997 I couldn't have imagined that I would end up playing international rugby and it was an amazing time for me. I was lucky enough to come in to a Scotland team that was going pretty well and the memories of my international career will never leave me. I have great affection for Glasgow and we try and get back as often as possible."
