LONG STANDING HAWKS SPONSOR GREAVES SPORTS ARE NOW HEADLINE SPONSOR FOR THE OLDEST INTER DISTRICT MATCH IN THE RUGBY WORLD

Tuesday, 22 December 2009

Greaves Sports, Scottish Rugby’s Official Retail Partner, were today announced as title sponsors for the biggest games in Scottish professional rugby, the 1872 Cup derbies, between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby.
The Magners League fixtures, which take place at Firhill on Sunday 27 December (kick-off 3.05pm) and Murrayfield on Saturday 2 January (kick-off 3.05pm), will also be broadcast live on terrestrial television for the first time via STV.
Commenting on today’s news, Greaves Sports’ Managing Director, Sandy Greaves, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be this year’s title sponsor of the 1872 Cup, the world’s oldest inter-city rugby matches.
“They are the biggest rugby matches in Scotland and – the way Glasgow and Edinburgh are playing – both games promise to be superb derbies.
“We’ve been selling a lot of tickets in our stores in recent weeks so we’re hoping for bumper crowds and two great occasions for the Scottish rugby community.
“The sponsorship offers the Greaves brand a superb platform with both matches being televised live. We are very proud of our association with Scottish Rugby and are glad to support the game in any way we can, be it at club, professional or international level.”
Glasgow Warriors chief executive, Kenny Baillie, said: “The 1872 Cup matches have become the highlight of the professional rugby season in Scotland and its popularity is growing year on year. We are therefore delighted Greaves Sports has become the title sponsor this year.
“Greaves Sports has been an energetic and committed supporter of rugby in Glasgow and across Scotland for a long time and nowhere is this better demonstrated than their support of the 1872 Cup.”
Edinburgh Rugby chief executive, Nic Cartwright, agreed: “I’m thrilled Greaves Sports are continuing to support Scottish rugby at all levels. The past two years have seen attendances at both 1872 Cup derbies grow hugely and we are expecting two more great turnouts for the matches over the festive period this season.”
Since coming on board with Scottish Rugby, Greaves have established the biggest rugby store in the country at the national stadium, Murrayfield.
The first leg of the Greaves Sports 1872 Cup derby takes place at Firhill on Sunday 27 December (kick-off 3.05pm). This precedes the return leg at Murrayfield on Saturday 2 January (kick-off 3.05pm). Both games are live on STV.
Tickets for both 1872 Cup derby matches cost £15 for adults in advance (£20 on match-day), £10 for concessions (students and senior citizens) and £5 for juniors (under-18s).
Tickets for the Glasgow leg can be bought in advance via the ticket hotline on 0844 800 3490, in person from Greaves Sports stores on Gordon Street and Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow city centre, or by logging onto www.glasgowwarriors.org.
Tickets for the Edinburgh leg can be bought in advance by calling 0131 346 5180, in person from the Scottish Rugby Ticket Centre (situated off Roseburn Street, open Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) or by logging onto www.edinburghrugby.org.
