To use the title of Gary Ralston's excellent book on the birth of Rangers sometimes to know where you are going it can be useful to know where you have come from.
In the midst of the buildup to the 1872 match at Firhill on 27th December why not ponder on what actually happened in 1872
What happened then was a team of 20 basically drawn from Glasgow Academicals F.C. and West of Scotland F.C took on the clubs of Edinburgh at the then home of Glasgow Accies Burnbank a ground near St George's Cross that Accies actually shared for a while with Rangers
Between then and now the Inter City has been played at several grounds including Hamilton Crescent,Hughenden ,Old and New Anniesland. The match was usually played on the first Saturday in December and straw was often used to protect the ground from frost
In 1923 a crowd of 8000 turned up at New Anniesland to see Glasgow draw 5-5 with Edinburgh Glasgow' try being scored by Herbert Waddell of Glasgow Accies which was converted by A Browning of Glasgow HSFP
