Scottish Rugby offers its congratulations to former Scotland player and coach Ian McGeechan who has been knighted in the New Year Honours List.
McGeechan, 63, won 32 caps for Scotland as a centre or stand-off between 1972 and 1979, out of the Headingley club in Leeds. He captained Scotland in nine of those internationals and also played in eight Test matches for the British and Irish Lions in South Africa (1974) and New Zealand (1977).
On retirement as a player McGeechan took up coaching, leading Scotland to their 1990 Grand Slam. He was also involved as coach on the Lions tours to Australia (1989); New Zealand (1993), South Africa (1997); and South Africa again (2009). He was also an assistant coach on the 2005 Lions tour to New Zealand.
