Aberdeenshire vs GHK
On a pretty dreary afternoon at Woodside, Aberdeen our guys took to the field in good heart having psyched themselves up watching the Lions video on the bus. A pity the conditions were windy with constant light persistent rain - the kind you know is going to soak through anything being worn as protection.
The home side kicked off with the elements and after the first 10 minutes of play the visiting support could tell it was to be a testing game for our guys. Aberdeenshire have a bigger pack who had been drilled by their coach to rumble everything up the middle using their weight advantage. They achieved this and scored an opportunist try from an upfield kick which both Sean and Davy at wing and full back respectively made a complete mess of, spilling the ball and allowing the home side to snatch an easy try.
A second score off good lineout ball gave the home side another unconverted try in the middle of the half, our only response a Davy Whyte penalty, score 10 -3 at the break. Could our guys make use of the elements in the second half?
It was clear from the restart that despite being a scrum half down in the sin bin, the home side were to keep far more possession which despite sterling defence by our guys was bound to tell. It was evident that in the conditions our backs had the edge on pace, however, the break and lack of possession killed any hope of breakaway tries. Most time spent in our half lining up waiting for the next wave of attacks became the norm - the home side scored a try from driven lineout ball, and one from a quick throw where at best we might excuse lack of touchline definition took our boys by surprise.
Some wrong options and poor infield kicking by us didn't help the result however we hope not to play in the same conditions again - to sum up the our frustration over the game a quote from the field to "bring on a ball with better grip" just about summed up the afternoon! Final score a well deserved 22 - 3 to Aberdeenshire
