The dreadful conditions – cold, wet and slippy underfoot didn't help handling or ball retention, but Boroughmuir displayed naïvety and lacked leadership.
Things looked good early on for the home side when a series of short-range drives resulted in Freddy Lait burrowing over. Duncan Weir reduced the leeway with a penalty for Hawks, but Graeme Blackhall restored the five-point margin with a penalty. However, Hawks then took the lead when Weir converted Cammy Kerr's maul-over try.
In the second period, Hawks slowly edged towards victory with a couple penalties from Weir and another from Mike Adamson.
Hawks coach Peter Wright said: "In the second half we kept the ball, put them under pressure and got the penalties."
