The Scotland 7s team were knocked out of the Bowl competition of the IRB Sevens World Series event in Hong Kong Sevens this morning by World Cup champions Wales.
The Scots had continued to build on their performances from days one and two and edged Japan by 12 points to ten in their first match of the knock-out stages.
Scotland seized the early initiative against Japan as Lee Jones scored little over a minute into the first half. Mike Adamson converted.
Jones’ try was cancelled out just before the break as Masahiro Tsuiki crossed for an unconverted score, but Grant Anderson replied two minutes into the second period.
Adamson’s conversion sailed wide, which could have proven costly as Japan once again crossed the whitewash, this time through Kenji Shomen. But Shomen failed to slot the extras to hand Scotland the win.
In their second outing, the Scots faced World Cup champions Wales.
Aaron Bramwell struck early for the Welsh, converting his own try with just 39 seconds on the clock.
Alex Cuthbert then followed suit with an unconverted try before Scotland’s Lee Jones crossed for his second of the day. Adamson converted to make it 12-7 at half-time.
The second half started brightly as both sides pulled each other around the park. But the Scots soon found themselves a man down as Michael Fedo was shown a yellow card for illegally clearing a man out at a ruck.
A man down, Scotland couldn’t hold Wales out and they eventually scored through Rhys Webb. Bramwell converted.
As the legs tired, Wales crossed the line for another converted score to flatter the scoreline in what was a closely fought encounter.
Scotland 7s coach Stephen Gemmell said: “We were disappointed with the last game because we attacked hard and caused Wales some real problems. But they got their tails up when we went a man down. It’s hard to defend against a team like that with six men at this level.”
In review of the weekend, Gemmell continued: “We were seeded 12th and finished 11th equal so we have been consistent with where we were last week.
“We have shown improvements in our performances but the challenge to the players now is to go back and work on their individual skills ahead of two massive tournaments - London and the finale in Edinburgh.”
