AND as we’ve now moved to counting the vote, we remember the tale of Glasgow Cathcart constituency when a paper was judged to be spoiled as the voter had written beside each name: “Bastard.”

However, the Labour election agent successfully appealed that the vote should go to John Maxton as beside his name the voter had actually written: “A bastard, too – but not as bad as the others,” which he claimed was a clear voting preference.

John Maxton played with Glasgow Accies in 60s and son Richard was a Hawks stalwart for many seasons and now coaches Hamilton
