Currie look for final push to claim title
Lewis Stuart
Currie go into today’s clash with Glasgow Hawks in the comfortable position of knowing that they need only two points to be handed the Scottish Hydro Premiership trophy at the end of the game. In reality they need only a single point to guarantee winning the title, though they would have to wait until the formality of Ayr failing to score almost 300 points away to Selkirk next week before the cup would be handed over.
The position was set up after Heriot’s prevented Ayr collecting a bonus point on Thursday night as the men from the west squeezed through 19-17. With each of the leading two clubs having one game left, Currie have a four-point lead and a huge advantage on score difference.
To be handed the trophy a week after their final game would be something of an anticlimax to a magnificent season for Currie, so Ally Donaldson, their coach, has been hammering into the players all week that they cannot take the points or the title for granted and must produce one more barnstorming performance to earn their reward.
