What's on in your area - West
It’s been a long winter and a very busy year but Summer is almost here so it’s the perfect time to look at some of last term’s highlights and this term’s forthcoming attractions.
Glasgow Primary Sports School of the Year
One of this year’s greatest success stories is Garscadden Primary’s win at the Sports Personality of the Year awards in February. They beat over thirty other nominees across the city for the coveted prize of Evening Times Glasgow Primary Sports School of the Year. The award acknowledges their hard work and ongoing commitment to providing a wealth of opportunities for children and Young People to engage in sport and physical activity.
Blairdardie's Young People Put Their Best Foot Forward
This term P6 pupils at Blairdardie Primary are stepping up to the 60 minutes a day challenge by participating in a lunchtime healthy walks programme. Run through Active Schools, the club will lead children along some of the local walking routes surrounding the school at Knightswood Park and the Forth and Clyde canal. The programme will culminate in a walking day out, where pupils will put their training to good use by completing part of the West Highland Way.
Bollywood at Scotstoun Primary
Last term P5 children at Scotstoun spiced up their lunchtimes by taking part in a Bollywood dance club. Bangles and scarves at the ready, the children strutted their stuff every week to the Bollywood beat. Their hard work culminated in a colourful performance of their routine at the end of term school assembly. Yoker Primary senior girls are getting their groove on to the Bollywood sound. The response has been so positive that local dance coach Morven Logan is now running afternoon and evening sessions at Scotstoun Leisure Centre. For further information contact Active Schools.
Funding
This year so far Active Schools has helped secure an additional £12,000 worth of funding for programmes across Knightswood Learning Community. With several large funding proposals on the horizon before the end of the school year this figure looks set to increase. Planning is now underway for many of next year’s programmes.
Megaball Mania Hits Knightswood
Every school in Glasgow has been let loose with a Megaball! This is to encourage children to be active for at least 60 minutes a day (the 60 minute message) using fun alternative methods. Active Schools is responsible for rolling out the programme and has been delivering demonstration days to show ways in which the Megaball can be used. A poster of Megaball games has also been produced. Yoker Primary were there representing Knightswood and a great time was had by all.
Community Club Links
As always Active Schools is continually working to strengthen the links with local schools and their surrounding community clubs. Some of the clubs and organisations we have been fortunate to work with this year are:
Drumchapel Table Tennis Club
Drumchapel Gymnastics
Glasgow Hawks Rugby
Ultimate Taekwondo
Pro – Judo Drumchapel
Glasgow Play Services
Rangers Education and Study Centre
The table tennis programme in partnership with Drumchapel Table Tennis club has been an ongoing success for some years now and is continuing to grow from strength to strength. With multiple clubs running across every school in Knightswood it’s no surprise that they all competed at the Table Tennis Glasgow West Primary Cup on May 20th at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.
Glasgow Hawks Rugby Programme
Last term pupils across all six primaries took part in the Glasgow Hawks Primary Tag Rugby Programme. Led by expert coaches at the Hawks, the five week’s worth of training sessions were delivered to pupils across P3 – P7, finishing with an end of term festival. Blairdardie Primary performed well enough on the day to make it through to the final ten schools participating in the Rugby Legacy finals this term.
Targeted Work
Active Schools is committed to providing opportunities for all children of school age and particularly those who may encounter barriers which can prevent them from participating in sport and physical activity. One such group is girls and young women and this year Active Schools has helped organise and fund a number of dance programmes across Knightswood to encourage girls to get active.
