After a gap of several years Hawks will return to Balgray for pre season training commencing on Thursday 8th July
Balgray is the home ground of our associate school Kelvinside Academy and has recently had a major upgrade
Lets hope this augurs well for Hawks as they enjoy the new facilities and they can emulate the performances of a very fine sportsman who trained at Balgray in its early days
The ground originally opened in 1901 with its first pavilion being the boathouse at Binghams Pond where now stands the Pond Hotel. This was replaced by the press pavilion from the Great Exhibition of 1901 held in Kelvingrove Park and a 500 seater stand was opened in 1904
Balgray has seen many fine sportsmen over the years but few could match Arthur Robertson
An all-round sportsman who originally preferred cycling, Robertson only took up athletics seriously in 1906; a fact that makes his achievements on the track all the more impressive. In 1908 alone Robertson won Olympic gold in the three mile team race - making him the first of only six Scots to do so - and Olympic silver in the steeplechase. He was also crowned the World Cross Country Champion, set a new world record in the 5,000m, and set a new Scottish native record in the four miles which remained unbeaten for some 45 years.
Olympic gold medal, three mile team race, 1908
Olympic silver medal, 3,000m steeplechase, 1908
World Cross Country Champion, 1908
World record holder, 5,000m, 1908
