Weir just right says Wright

Evening Times reports

Former Scotland rugby star Peter Wright has backed Duncan Weir to win his battle with Ruaridh Jackson to become Glasgow Warriors’ stand-off.

The duo were given a half each in Warriors’ 22-23 friendly defeat against Sale Sahrks.

Warriors coach Sean Lineen will start Weir in Saturday’s final friendly at London Wasps, with Jackson set to come on after the interval at Adams Park, a reverse of their appearance against the Sharks.

Wright said: “I thought both guys did good things on Friday night and the great thing is they play pretty flat.

“I think where Duncan has the edge is in his kicking, out of hand and in terms of penalties and conversions.

“He is that bit more accurate and powerful and he impressed on Friday against Sale.

“But it is different when you start the game and that brings different pressures for Duncan on Saturday.

“It is just great for Glasgow they have two such talented kids.”

Glasgow scored four tries on Friday, Richie Gray bagging a brace and Max Evans and Ryan Grant also touching down.

Wright admits that, given the inexperience of the Warriors side, he was impressed.

He said: “Considering so many big names were out it was a good, competitive performance.”

Warriors have taken Sale scrum-half Will Cliff on loan until September and Canadian flanker Chauncey O’Toole is returning to Firhill until October.

Wright’s Glasgow Hawks got their Premiership One campaign off to a flyer with a six-try, 41-15 win over West of Scotland.

Wright said: “It was a great team performance and one that has set the bar for the season.”
