Watsonians 2nd XV 17-39 Glasgow Hawks 2nd XV
2ND XV rugby often needs creativity in selection- doesn't get more creative than winger Mini Mitchell at 6, scrum-half Paddy Boyer at 7 !! These guys stepped up to the mark, played out of position and were part of an outstanding forward effort. A spirited Watsonians team, some seriously bizarre refereeing and a couple of missed tackles made for a pretty competitive first hour.
Robbie McGregor made it 3-0 from our first attack, after defending for 10mins. Louis Kinsey got first try after great lead up work, Robbie added another pen just after. 11-0.
Watsonians weren't for lying down, put pressure on our line and eventually scored under posts. As if the 7pts wasn't enough, ref decided to yellow card Mini for ruck offence- consistent with an afternoon of head scratching at his decisions! Watsons pen made it 11-10 H-T.
Early 2nd half Sean Murray finished off a superb backs move- apparently Coach Dempsey had something to do with its origins? Watsons found a weakness in fringe defence for 2nd try and conv put them up 17-16.
The next 5mins won the game for us- sustained pressure on our line was met by ferocious defence, turned into attack and ended with Graham Harkness scoring from a line-out as the whole Watsons team stood watching! Tempo increased, relentless attacking pressure thru' whole team ended in Robbie kicking 2 more pens. Followed by 2 sin bins for Watsons for slowing ball down. Alan Tilston finished great series of phases after first sin bin, then Mark Taylor was at end of length of the field move just before final whistle. Final 39-17, emphatic in end but tough old afternoon.
