AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW ON HERIOTS MATCH BY JENNY AND THE GIRLS

Hawks Vs Herriots: 24.09.05
100m up the road on the finely groomed pitches of Old Anniesland we made our way over to the side-lines, although slightly late - due to pre-match layering up…of course (oh and chatting up Hugh for some free tickets!),where the Hawks were already carving up on the pitch.

With us, in the ranks, of lady supporters (although for some the word ‘ladies’ is questionable; only due to the fact that we are not old enough of course), Heidi McFadden all the way from Australia, was incredibly watching her first...but certainly not her last game of rugby, just unfortunate that her boyfriend wasn’t playing in it….oh well plenty more legs on the pitch!

It was a dry but chilly day, one that requires the warmth of a hot toddy or two according to Jobby Maxton who was keeping us all entertained with his fantastic chat and abuse as always. Such a lovely chap. You see we required further entertainment due to the fact that someone seems to keep feeding the subs with miracle grow – they get taller every week, and have mastered the art of standing in front of you no matter where you choose to stand!

Anyway, the rugby really seems to be picking up this season. So impressive at times that our steady chat was interrupted to take note of a nicely timed passed from Mike or a nifty kick from Murray. Particular highlights included Stevie G's excellent kick down and subsequent try. Along with Neil McKenzie's all important bonus point try and Ally McClay's impressive play and try, honouring him with the official man of the match. Stu Low also played consistently well landing him with the unofficial man of the match award of a bottle of bud, and a kiss from the ladies. We all know he sometimes suffers slightly short of those…bottles of bud that is.

Compared with the last few games the boys showed improved formation and cooperation on the pitch. This was reflected by the sweet score line of ? well they were ahead anyway….and despite being at a disadvantage, due to injury! They were missing the unsurpassed talents of Jobby Maxton and Dambuster Duffster. Not to mention the expertise of anger management man Steve Begley – was he injured though? or was it another holiday?? To add to this Stevie G received a nasty gash to the rear of his ear; however this was quickly and efficiently attended to by the sweet innocent Princess Linda – sporting a lovely new hat. Play was also stopped when prop and Captain Eric the Red fell to the ground holding his ankle and taking a much deserved rest from the action. This stop in game provided Scottie the water-boy whippet with the perfect opportunity to sprint onto the pitch – earning him the prestigious award of best legs of the match. Best bum went to Red’s fine short eating cheeks.

The boys gave an impressive performance with the usual tough tackles from Franco and Neilly, nippy runs from Stu Low and Mikey, and a strange woman cross cat like scream from Sitchy (giving no 5 a go), as spotted by Heidi who was paying particular attention, as we were distracted by a rather handsome supporter strutting past. We also noticed the talents of a new player all the way from Australia who resembled a stinging bee with a fetching yellow scrum cap.

Later at the club house while the pies were circulating, the boys were setting new records in slow changing. As the boys all finally decided to emerge, we made our way over to New Anniesland for a well deserved refreshment to nurse our hoarse throats.

Looking forward to more fun and games next week…….
