The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh
‘A team is a team is a team. Shakespeare said that many times’.
Dan Devine (1924–2002), American football coach and B-29 flight officer
Men, many of you may be unaware that today that it is 463 years since the famous Battle of Pinkie Cleugh along the banks of the River Esk near Musselburgh in 1547. This engagement was part of the War of the Rough Wooing and was the last pitched battle to be fought between the Scottish and the English Royal armies. It ended in a catastrophic defeat for the Scots and became known as Black Saturday. The battle was historically significant as the first "modern" battle fought in Britain, demonstrating active cooperation between the infantry, artillery and cavalry with a naval bombardment in support of the land forces.
In recent years the Regiment has turned the tide across the border on many occasions tasting success to varying degrees including certain individuals becoming a firm favourite of the guesthouse proprietor. However, much has stayed the same and like the English at Pinkie Cleugh, working together, the Regiment has done well.
Our great game, Rugby Union is life’s greatest coming together. We come together from fields and factories, village markets and supermarkets. Living rooms and boardrooms. Deep drainage or with our children in the park, or washing clothes in a river, or the office water cooler. We come together in a unique way to play out our collective aspirations. We share a common future. As we become ever more engrossed in the campaign, we must work hard to unite around our common values and our common goal.
