Hawks 2's 35-5 Currie 2's
For those impressed by the other journo's in depth analysis of last week's game , sorry its back to the usual brief blog of this week's! Think he was trying to show the benefit of a better education or greater concentration span or had nothing to do of a Sunday????
Malleny Park , never an easy place to visit but after this comprehensive dismantling of Currie it became less daunting. All season have been looking to play with pace and power and was achieved for most of the 80mins. For first 30 we just could not finish!! Every scoring position created and only one finished by Sean Murray after great lead up work from Jonno Wright and Mark Taylor. The terms "butchered" and "numerous chances" summed up first half. Currie took advantage of our profligacy by scoring in corner just before half-time.
It felt like should have been a 40 point lead at H-T, instead of 7-5 !
Instead of looking for individual glory and every way of spoiling a 2 on 1 attack we re-grouped and increased the tempo from the re-start. Several off loads got in behind defence and great feet stood up last 3 defenders for Sean to finish in corner. Robbie kicked 2nd difficult conversion, prefers them to easy penalties that were missed in first half!
Currie's defence stood up well to the pounding it took for next half hour and when we had to our defence was best of season, good chat and looked organised,
We tend to hit little purple patches and this one happened after 71mins, 3 tries in 5mins. First Paddy Boyer scampered over from great no.8 pick up by Graham Harkness. From kick-off Harky made great break , link thru' loads of hands for Mini Mitchell to finish. Last was good phases before break down touch-line by Paddy and cheeky overhead pass to Sean at fantastic angle to sprint in from half-way. 3 great conversions by Robbie rounded it off.
Ref played a huge role in keeping the score down- Jonno Wright made great break in first half and over try line tried to get round behind posts, adjudged to have hit dead ball line before grounding! Tom Stephen showed great strength to get thru tackle and over line, ref about to award try when spectator shouted at him and changed his mind- penalty to Currie!, Sean came at pace and angle onto a pass from Robbie, ref only guy in ground to think it was forward! Having had same one twice in 3 weeks players know what to expect now?
Exciting rugby to watch but need bit more peripheral vision to finish all chances created, never a dull moment with this team!
