Highland desperate to restore their pride
MACKINTOSH’S MEN AIM TO ATONE FOR DRUBBING
Published: 17/09/2010

HIGHLAND head coach Hugh Mackintosh chose not to read the riot act after last weekend’s National League Division 2 46-0 surrender at Berwick.

Instead, he simply pinned the result up on the dressing-room wall.

Mackintosh refused to criticise his makeshift side which made the 440-mile round trip. But he has no intention of allowing his team to accept that kind of result as the norm.

Highland make a welcome return to home soil tomorrow when they face promotion favourites Glasgow Academicals.

He said: “It is hard to be too critical of the players who went down.

“We had eight flankers and just three genuine backs. But the players know they let themselves down.

“The people back in Inverness were shocked by the result. We were as well.

crazy

“I want them to prove they are not a side which is prepared to lose by that scoreline.

“It sounds crazy but we started the game well and we were still in it at half-time when the score was 17-0. But we gifted them four tries and the heads went down.

“We have got a few more players available this week and I want the team to restore a bit of pride, which I am sure it will.

“With the geographical problems we are always going to find it hard for away games but that should not stop us trying to make our home ground a fortress.”

Mackintosh will welcome back Tam Magowan and Ross Thompson, among others, and is expecting a difficult encounter.

He said: “Accies are one of the favourites for promotion and they have started the season well.

“They are a good side, we are not kidding ourselves, and it will be tough for us.

“The players have a steely determination, however, and, regardless of the outcome, I am confident Accies will know they have been in a game.”
