Once upon a time in the Empire

When Hawks players/ex players Mike Adamson,Colin Shaw and Scott Forrest hit Delhi they have lot to live up to-- they have to live up to the likes of Alan Patterson, and Andy Forbes the likes of Lachie Stewart and Ian MaCafferty
Rugby is relatively new but Scotland's proud tradition is not --from Hamilton 1930 to Auckland 1950 and to Edinburgh 1970
Alan Patterson and Andy Forbes who competed in the famous colours of Victoria Park AAC and trained out of Scotstoun Showgrounds(now Warriors HQ) both won silver in 1950 in the High Jump and 6 miles respectively--they could not afford to take time off work as the team sailed to New Zealand so Glasgow business man and cinema magnet Sir A.B King paid for their airfares-- such was the amateur era-and it still took a week
Andy did much of his training from the "steamie" at Whiteinch Baths running the roads of Anniesland and took on the best of the Empire as it was then
Rolling on the years to 1970 two great athletes one from the Vale and one from the Law took on the finest runners of the Commonwealth as it had then become on the track at Meadowbank
Lachie Stewart from the Vale of Leven(who did a lot of his training on Gt Western Rd) won gold over 10.000 metres beating world record holder Ron Clarke of Australia on the opening Saturday and set the tone for the Games and on the closing day Ian MaCafferty from Law took silver in the 5000 metres
From the British Empire Games to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games then British Commonwealth Games and now the Commonwealth Games the title has evolved but winning medals is still the focus--over to Mike,Colin and Scott
Good luck from all at Anniesland
