GHK update from Ally F

GHK News - The View from the First Man Over the Top

The Ed is moved to comment on this great effort by our GHK correspondent
The lineup as below could have featured in movie classics like Gone with the Wind and Gettysburg
This skilled wordsmith was right to draw comparisons with that great conflict known in the South as the War of Northern Agression after all our Second City produced ships like the Robert E Lee to run the Union blockade into Southern ports

Lift up your hearts above the level of the former year

“Glasgow is a city that when you visit you must remember to look up...”

Wench overheard in Argyle Street on Wednesday lunchtime.

Firstly, after many tough weeks for the Regiment, normal service has resumed with no players on the wedding circuit, no funeral bearers required, only one bar mitzvah to attend, milking the cows and sheep complete and Gordy the barman has returned from visiting his brother in South Shields.

Men, on these Friday morning moseys this tow-coloured scribe could all to easily fall into the trap of telling the Regiment what to do. As I leap the parapet wall and march ahead it is not for me to expect any officer to follow. Perhaps, the View From the Top should make more effort to steer away from the risk of a prescriptive director of enterprise towards that of a model, which encourages and guides as a credible example worth emulating.

Men of O.A. I am honoured to count a number of friends among you. Over the years we have conferred, agreed, and argued with one another on a variety of topics concerning our great game Rugby Union. We have met in the Jim Donald Bar and as far off lands as Trevor Brennan’s basement comfort station. We have been on buses together at times when the battle appeared perpetual, yet all these stir my memories of enduring friendships fuelled by a shared aspiration.

This day I must speak of the issue of aspiration. Yes the squeeze in Argyle Street was referring her foreign kindred to the architecture of our own Second City but today I urge you to look beyond the crow-stepped gables, rustication and indeed the most important of all – the parapet. At the referees whistle tomorrow let us look toward the empyrean and when the gamete-shaped ball drops, catch it and run unbridled and without shackle Whether back or forward our individual aspiration must be worn on the sleeve of our green and navy shirt. Such a showing urgently challenges and summons the skill and courage of our whole group.

I know for a fact that our actions speak louder than words so let us play our game together in this manner and allow others to watch, knowing that while our example is at times not perfect it is undoubtedly honorable and I hope in some small part that this Friday Ramble can contribute.

Adjutant General Shambilton has signaled the multi-flanked charge to confer on that clump of trees being careful to avoid the Tiger and Powlee’s buggy whilst The Prince has been sent to Elgin.

Yours as always, running towards the gunfire. 11am Flying Scotsman. Pulling armpit hairs. Never wearing white boots. The need to pee at five to three. Forwards should always hunt in packs. Grasp the waistband.

Supporting Note: Word on the wind is that the great Major K. Cowan has returned with sponsorship and bought a horse.
