GHK pull through for a closely fought 18-12 win.
GHK started the game with the wind at their backs and put on the pressure straight from the kick off to camp on Cambuslang's 22.
An excellent scrummage drive released quality ball to the backs who showed good skills with Tony Herron coming in and straightening the line with a feed to Danny Hoffmann who produced a couple of neat swerves and ran in to score an unconverted try to make it 0 - 5 in 3 mins.
The forwards continued to put real pressure on the Cambuslang forwards, disrupting many of their early scrums and providing an ideal platform for the backs. The backs produced glimpses of their form from the previous week with quick movement but too many passes missed their man or were fired too hard with the wet ball resulting in knock ons and dropped passes. However GHK were on top and continued to dominate.
GHK forwards were also taking good lineout ball and from a take and drive in our own half John Shannon kicked to Cambuslang's 22. A poor clearance was run back at Cambuslang and a penalty for a high tackle in front of the posts was kicked by Tony Herron. 0 - 8 in 21 mins. Another GHK penalty 25 metres out was again kicked by Tony Herron. 0 - 11 in 30 mins.
GHK had several other chances to add to the score but needed a bit more composure at key moments.
Cambuslang finished the half on the attack and GHK showed gritty defence to keep them out in a series of breenges from several 5 metre scrums. GHK deserved to be further ahead at half time.
It was a different story in the second half. Cambuslang used the wind well to pin GHK in their own half and to a large part, within their own 22, for most of the half. This gave Cambuslang momentum and they were quickly back in the game with a try from a quickly taken tap penalty following a catch and drive from a lineout on GHK's 5 metre line. 5 - 11 in 46 mins.
A further try followed when Cambuslang again got back to GHK's 5 metre line and a wheeled scrum made the gap on the blind side for the winger to score in the corner. The conversion made it 12 - 11 in 49 mins.
It was 20 mins before GHK got a period of pressure in Cambuslang's 22 but couldn't make anything of it and Cambuslang cleared a penalty back to GHK's 22. GHK had to dig deep and a great team effort produced some exceptional defence under constant pressure.
The GHK scrum, which had been solid throughout the game, surpassed themselves with a take against the head in their own 22. The ball was quickly moved through the hands to Tony Herron who slipped the ball to Rory Love who made a half break and fed to the looping Danny Hoffmann. Danny got outside the cover defence and raced 60 metres to score an excellent break out try on 70 mins. Tony Herron converted to make it 12 - 18.
GHK's resolute defence was put to the test over the final 10 mins but some great work was rewarded with a clearance to Cambuslang's 22 and GHK kept the pressure on Cambuslang over the last few minutes to win 18 - 12.
A very good win with GHK showing tremendous team spirit to pull through to win the game.
